The effect of joint configuration on the strength and stress distributions of dissimilar adhesively bonded joints

The recent increase in the use of adhesively bonded joints (ABJs) made from dissimilar adherends demands acquisition a better understanding strength and behaviour these joints, including their failure mechanisms. Several studies have reported on such individually, however few compared performances ABJs with varying configurations design parameters, order to determine optimal configuration for hybrid structures. In this work, comparative study using experimental methods finite element analysis was conducted, focusing four joint (scarf stepped-lap half-lap splice single-lap joints), aim evaluating ways which differ. addition, effects overlap length (L0) mechanical properties overall success each were particularly closely analysed compared. results showed that scarf provided best performance all designs discussed, it found increasing only significantly beneficial certain adherend combinations. When increased 12.5 mm 25 mm, load by 47.50% 21.25% respectively. comparison, percentage increases under same conditions less than 10%. Moreover, considerably affected mechanisms configurations, initiated crack at adherend-adhesive interface adjacent lower modulus.
